The following is a line of descent traced from Francois-Xavier Nocoute of Aboujagane to Joseph Knockwood of Dorchester. This information has been compiled by the undersigned with the assistance of the aforesaid Joseph Knockwood from the records of the Parishes of Barachois, New Brunswick, and Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island. In the case of the first Parish, the undersigned has had direct access to the photographic copies of the original records. In the case of the latter, all information comes from certified copies obtained by Mr. Knockwood from the Pastor of the Parish. The specific documentation supporting each detail of this information is indicated where appropriate.
I. Francois-Xavier Nocoute, born about 1755, married Marie-Madeleine Piminuit before 1785. The records of Barachois describe Francois-Xavier as coming from Baie Verte. His descendants appear continously in the records of Barachois from 1816, suggesting that the family had settled at Aboujagane by that date. He died April 17, 1832. His grave at Barachois was blessed April 25, 1832. He was seventy-seven years old according to this record. His widow died June 16, 1842 and was buried at Barachois, Grand-Digue, and Richibucto Village, one finds that Francois-Xavier Nocoute had at least six children Joseph, Francois-Xavier, Madeline, Marie and Marie-Angelique.
II. Francois-Xavier Nocoute, born about 1788, married by 1810 to Marie-Francois Ahote. This couple apparently resided continously at Aboujagane from at least 1816, for the Parish Registers of Barachois include entries of baptisms and other records of their children at regular intervals from that year. Francois-Xavier Nocout was buried at Barachois, March 10, 1846, aged fifty eight years. His wife predeceased him, dying March 24, 1841, at the age of fifty-seven. She was also buried at Barachois March 25, 1841. The Parish Registers of Barachois and Grand-Digue contain records of eight children born to Francois-Xavier Nocoute and Marie Francois Ahote: Sylvain, Louis (c. 1812-1819), Etienne (1816-1821), a child who died before baptism (1819-1819), Jean (born 1821), Pierre (1824-1825), Pierre-Jacques (1826-1827), and Thomas.
III. Sylvain Nocoute, married November 11, 1830 at Barachois, Ursule Jerome, daughter of Joseph Jerome and Madeleine -- (surname omitted in record) of Bouctouche. Six children of this couple have been traced in the registers of Barachois and Melrose: Genevieve (1832-1835), Andre (1833-1834), Marie (born 1835), Felicite (1840-1841), Thomas (c. 1841-1842), and Marie Elizabeth (born 1848).
IV. Marie Nocoute, baptized July 15, 1835, at Barachois, married July 9, 1851, at Barachois, to Hubert Labobe. The bridegroom in this record is described simply as an Indian from Prince Edward Island; the names of his parents are not given. Those of Marie Nocoute are named, however; Sylvain and Ursule, Indians of Barachois. Sylvain Nocoute was present at his young daughters marriage and consented to it. Records of three sons of Hubert Labobe and Marie Nocoute have been found in the registers of Lennox Island and the baptism of one daughter in those of Tignish; Pierre (born 1852), Agnes (born 1853), Phillipe and Gabriel (born 1854).
V. Philippe ( or Phillip) Labobe, married August 1, 1875, at Lennox Island, Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of Joseph Lewis and Louisa Snake. Philip Labobe died at Lennox Island February 14, 1909. He and Elizabeth Lewis had at least three sons; Lemeul (born 1876), Peter and Anthony.
VI. Lemuel Labobe, born August 1, 1876, at Lennox Island, married there August 6, 1894, Madeleine Bernard, daughter of Joseph Bernard and Mary Anne Thompson. Madeleine Bernard was born May 11, 1878, and died January 6, 1972.
VII. Mary Elizabeth Labobe, born February 28, 1898, at Lennox Island, married there August 26, 1924, James Knockwood, son of Israel Knockwood (Nocoute) and Mary Ann Toney of Dorchester, New Brunswick. Mary Elizabeth (Labobe) Knockwood died January 10, 1972.
VIII. Joseph Knockwood of Dorchester (Fort Folly) New Brunswick.
The foregoing is an accurate and complete representation of the information available to me regarding the descent of Joseph Knockwood from Francois-Xavier Nocoute.
